"In silence, he discovered truth, That strength was found in his own youth. The tulip’s road, though small and meek, Led him to places he had yet to seek..."
My artwork, The Sound of Tulips, was born from the beauty and quiet complexity of tulips, flowers that to me embody modesty and resilience. The tulip’s petals, reaching outward but often slightly closed, represent a sense of hidden vibrance, almost as if they're shy to reveal their colors fully—a trait I find incredibly symbolic and relatable. Like the tulip, we each carry colors and stories within, sometimes waiting for the right moment to open up and be seen.
Historically, tulips have been layered with symbolism. During the Ottoman Empire, tulips represented paradise on earth, while in the 17th century Dutch Golden Age, they became emblems of wealth and status—a time famously known as "Tulip Mania." Yet beyond their historical weight, tulips convey a quieter message about simplicity and grace. These flowers don’t scream for attention; rather, they quietly bloom, carrying an elegance that feels authentic and unpretentious. This humility is what I wanted to capture in The Sound of Tulips—the power of standing tall without needing to overpower.
The color yellow holds a special place for me, resonating as a reminder of home—not just a physical space, but a grounding within myself. Yellow, the color of warmth and light, mirrors the joy and comfort that I find in authenticity and self-acceptance. I remember visiting the Efteling as a child and being mesmerized by the "Droomvlucht" attraction. There were tulips scattered throughout the whimsical landscape, nestled in places that seemed to blend nature with fantasy. That early experience planted something within me; the tulips seemed like small guardians of hidden beauty, their colors blending into the background but always present, always watching.
Botanically, tulips are relatively simple compared to more elaborate flowers, yet their modesty speaks volumes. Their smooth, curved petals are soft but structured, and their leaves stretch up as if reaching for something greater—a perfect symbol for growth, for reaching beyond but staying rooted. In The Sound of Tulips, I sought to express that feeling of reaching while staying grounded, of allowing oneself to be soft, yet resilient. The tulip’s journey, its small steps and humble presence, mirror a personal journey of self-acceptance and embracing the colors within.
So, as you take in The Sound of Tulips, I hope you feel that invitation to quietly bloom, to unfold at your own pace, and to stand proudly in the colors that feel like home.
